Psychological Influence on Weight

October 19, 2020

Obesity and mental health are closely related; one causes the other. A person’s state of mind can have a direct impact on his weight; reversely, a person’s weight and body image can have a significant impact on his mental health. According to a study conducted on depression, the effect is found to be 3-4 times in obese and overweight people. Another research project was carried out by the National Obesity Observatory and the results imply that obese people had a 55% chances of developing depression and those who were already diagnosed with severe depression, had a 58% chance of getting obese.

Society fuels obesity
According to the new norms of society, food consumption habits has changed over time. Snacking throughout the day, the society and its people widely accept binge eating at late nights and weekends, meeting over a cup of coffee, calorie-dense beverages and enjoying delicious food as a part of a social event.

When you’re trying to make some healthy food choices, this behaviour of society stops you from doing that. Nobody likes to feel left out, and because of that, you tend to eat and drink whatever your peers are ordering. Peer pressure is the thing here, which fuels obesity these days.

Emotional triggers to food
It’s not always the hunger that causes you to eat. There are certain emotional disorders due to which a person tends to binge-eat in order to feel good and relaxed. Food can make any person happy, due to this fact, many people get inclined towards eating whenever they feel stressed, and anxiety surrounds them. Some of the most common emotional triggers are-

Feeling low
Anxiety
Stress
Depression
Anger
Loneliness
Frustration
Irritation
Left out feeling
