What makes you disqualified for bariatric surgery?

October 14, 2022

A form of weight loss therapy called bariatric surgery entails medically altering your digestive tract. A doctor will only suggest bariatric surgery if other weight loss methods, such as food control or exercise, are ineffective.

Patients with a Body Mass Index (BMI) over 35 are also encouraged to lose weight because failing to do so quickly enough increases the risk of health problems like stroke, heart disease, sleep apnea, type 2 diabetes, and fatty liver.

While the elements above typically qualify you for benefits, there are several circumstances in which you may not, such as:

• If your BMI is below the 35-40 range.
• Because surgical intervention imposes stress on the body, you will be disqualified if your general health is terrible. Before the procedure, various diagnostic tests will be performed to establish this.
• Smokers who cannot break their habit six weeks before surgery will be disqualified.
• The doctor will also consider the patient’s emotional and mental health. The patient may be excluded if it is determined that they are unstable.
• Your doctor will typically decide if your situation is suitable for bariatric surgery during your health evaluation and consultation.

There are several ‘contra-indications’ to surgery, which could indicate that you are not a candidate. Even if you can relate to any of the above, it doesn’t necessarily mean you can’t get surgery. Instead, it just means that you are at a considerable risk than most others.

These are listed below:

  1. Addiction to alcohol or drugs.
  2. Being under 16 or older than 75.
  3. Heart disease or severe lung conditions in the past. You may be at greater risk as a result when under anaesthesia.
  4. A history of persistent pancreatitis. Liver cirrhosis is one example.
  5. Immune conditions such as systemic lupus erythematosus.
  6. Blood condition that raises the risk of significant bleeding.
  7. A history of severe mental illness.

You are also not a candidate for obesity surgery if you are:

i. Getting treated for cancer (for example, chemotherapy).
ii. Suffer from ulcerative colitis or Crohn’s disease (an inflammatory bowel disease).
iii. Pregnancy.
